ARENDT QUINQUENNIAL

Tips and Recommendations

Tips (most of this is for noobs, but everyone is a Mexico noob at some point):

  • Uber is generally available and very cheap for all rides EXCEPT rides from the airport (though Uber is available for rides to the airport). Uber is recommended for car travel. We advise arranging transportation from the airport in advance and many car companies are available, but one recommendation is Eliker Transfer.

  • Most restaurants/stores/etc. will accept credit cards. Exceptions may be very small street food stalls and street vendors.

  • Bring a credit card that has no foreign transaction fees and pay in Mexican pesos (not USD) when possible as it will help ensure you get the best pricing. Your credit card will likely give you a better exchange rate than anywhere else. You might want to let your credit card company know you'll be in Mexico if you don't travel often to ensure your cards don't get declined.

  • If you need/want cash, use an ATM in Mexico to get pesos for the best exchange rates and lowest fees. Most bank branches in Mexico have several ATMs and your USA debit card should work just fine (similar to your credit cards, might help to let your bank know you'll be in Mexico). Most people won't need cash.

  • Most mobile phone plans will work seamlessly in Mexico. Regardless, if you're not sure, contact your phone company and ensure you'll have easy and cheap serivce in Mexico.

  • When you enter Mexico, you'll fill out an immigration form on the plane and the Mexican immigration officer will leave the bottom portion of that form in your passport. Keep that form for your return flight (if you lose it you'll need to go through an annoying process to get another one).

  • Cabo is split between Cabo San Lucas (what most people think of as Cabo) and San Jose del Cabo (a bit less touristy and more quiet). The Cape Hotel is somewhat between the two of them, but a bit closer to the San Lucas side. We encourage you to check out both towns!
